Patagonia is probably one of the top world fly-fishing destinations and the challenging waters in the province of Chubut are no exception. The lakes, rivers and spring creeks around the Hostería offer unparalleled opportunities to catch outstanding examples of wild brown, brook and rainbow trout as well as perch and landlocked salmon. The fish themselves, wild and strong, are agile and feisty enough to test the most experienced fisherman. They are also extremely sensitive, unaccustomed to humans, and with good eyesight which means they are easily scared off. Furthermore, the crystal clarity of the water makes depth judgment deceptive.
Trout and salmon are not native to Argentina but were imported from the United States and Europe and planted in some of Patagonia’s largest lakes in the early 20th century. Since then, much work has taken place to ensure a stable and plentiful population of quality wild fish for anglers, principally brook, brown and rainbow trout and landlocked salmon, averaging 20 inches in length. Additionally, local fishing regulations respect a stringent catch and release policy.
Tito Tagle, the fishing guide at Hostería del Pedregoso has a number of different outings planned to suit all tastes and ensures that each fisherman returns satisfied at the end of the day whatever his or her level of skill. A typical full day out starts at 7 am with a boat ride along the Carrileufú river to Lago Rivadavia, along Rivadavia river and finally to Lago Verde, with countless opportunities for nymphing and dry fly casting in stunningly beautiful surroundings. There are also options for shorter outings along the Remanso river.
